“An unusual round church, possibly built over a Roman temple of Diana. A ritual in which animals are driven three times counterclockwise around the chapel and blessed. That’s my kind of powerful place!” —Elyn
São Mamede de Janas has been sacred for a long time. Local legend asserts that there was a temple dedicated to Diana at the site. Prehistoric remains in the vicinity indicate that the importance of this sacred site goes back even further. The current incarnation of the temple is a round, white-washed chapel located on a sandy rise, 600 m (0.37 mi) up the road from the village of Janas. A small pine forest is behind it, a large clearing in front of it. The chapel has been classified as a Monument of Public Interest since 2014.
